BEHIND THE SCENES

We congratulated a beaming Jay Carney outside the courthouse. “In all my years,” Carney said, “I’ve never had a witness admit he’s a liar and then threaten to ‘take me outside.’” He set his briefcase down on the hot sidewalk. “And then, to have the victims’ families come over and shake my hand? I’m a defense attorney.” He shook his head with disbelief. “It’s an extraordinary trial.”2

It was extraordinary. The media recognized it, and couldn’t get enough. They loved the threats and the exchange of expletives between Whitey and Weeks. Throngs of reporters scurried with microphones and cables to capture the mood live on camera. Additional media trucks lined Seaport Boulevard. A large public crowd had gathered on the sidewalk and spilled into the street. A helicopter hovered above.

Jay Carney could barely make it to his car. People just wanted an opportunity to shake his hand.
